Many Democrats are clearly still angry with how the tea partiers in Congress have been acting over the past few weeks, and on MSNBC’s Up Saturday morning, Congressman Steve Cohen told Steve Kornacki that these tea partiers are really nothing more than “domestic enemies” of the United States.
Kornacki asked Cohen if he thought “things would play out differently” the next time Congress has to take up government funding and raising the debt ceiling. Cohen said, “If a child puts their finger on a burner, they’re not likely to go to that burner again.” However, he expressed his concern that some Republicans may not have learned their lesson, saying a lot of them got “energy” out of the shutdown fight.
Cohen was baffled at how these tea partiers seem to think they’re “guerillas there to strike a blow for freedom,” and let off a little steam with this particularly charged accusation.
“We take an oath to support the country against all enemies foreign and domestic, and these are the domestic enemies.”
Cohen is not averse to taking rhetorical leaps, having rather infamously compared Republican talking points on health care to Nazi propaganda.
